Set off on a day trip from Rome across the Italian countryside to discover the birthplace of St Francis in the charming town of Assisi.
Tour Description
After picking you up at your hotel at the scheduled time, we’ll leave the Italian capital behind and head north toward the Umbria region. Are you ready to explore one of Italy’s most famous pilgrimage sites?
Upon arriving in Assisi, we’ll take a guided tour to discover all the secrets of St. Francis’s hometown. First, we’ll visit the Basilica of St. Clare, where the relics of the saint, a follower of St. Francis and founder of the Order of St. Clare, are preserved. We’ll explore this 13th-century Italian Gothic sanctuary, located right in the heart of Assisi.
Next, we’ll head to Town Hall Square, where we’ll admire the exteriors of the Palace of the Priors, the People’s Capitol, the Civic Tower, and the so-called Temple of Minerva, the best-preserved Roman building in the entire region.
During the guided tour, we’ll also learn about Saint Rufino of Assisi, the patron saint of the city. We’ll continue our tour by visiting the shrine of Carlo Acutis in the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, in Piazza del Vescovado. Did you know that this is the site of Assisi’s first cathedral? And that it’s where St. Francis of Assisi renounced his earthly possessions? This place is steeped in history!
As you might expect, we’ll visit the Basilica of St. Francis, which houses the saint’s tomb, frescoes from the 12th to the 14th centuries, and masterpieces by artists such as Cimabue, Giotto, Pietro Lorenzetti, and Simone Martini.
After the guided tour, we’ll head to a local restaurant to enjoy a delicious traditional lunch. The meal will consist of a selection of Umbrian cold cuts and cheeses, a main course of pasta or meat, and dessert. You’ll also be able to choose a drink from two wines: a Sagrantino (red) or a Grechetto (white).
With your appetite satisfied, we’ll give you an hour of free time to explore the medieval town of Assisi on your own. You’ll love its narrow streets and traditional shops.
Finally, we’ll head back to Rome, where the tour will end at Rome Termini Central Station 12 hours after pickup.
